Butterflies, Birds & Blooms

The signs of Spring are everywhere – butterflies are flitting, birds are chirping, and flowers are blooming.

A mama hummingbird has her nest under my patio roof. This is the third time the nest has been used and it looks like there’s one baby in it. My deep purple iris is blooming in the backyard and soft blue periwinkle is blooming in the front yard. The air even smells of spring!

I look for ways to create jewelry that conveys that feeling of spring. My favorite is to use metal, snippets of greeting cards, and resin. My sister-in-law, Susan, is a fabulous painter who turns her original works of art into greeting cards. Her use of color and pattern is simply intoxicating.

I search through her cards to find just the right combination of pattern and color and then cut out butterfly, robin, swallow, and flower shapes. The cut-out shapes are then sealed on all sides with three coats of Mod Podge. Once sealed, each shape is attached to a correspondingly shaped metal blank. Finally, I apply a coat of resin which adds dimension and protects the snippet of greeting card. This process takes several days.

Once the resin is cured, I turn the butterflies, robins, swallows and flowers into earrings and necklaces. Butterfly or bird necklaces feature one bird or butterfly hanging from a fine chain. Flower necklaces feature either just one flower hanging from a fine chain or a centerpiece of multiple flowers.

As I work, I’m captivated by the colors and patterns of each butterfly, bird, or bloom. Each piece reminds me of the power of nature to enhance our lives.
While my butterflies, birds and blooms may not look like those in nature, I hope they evoke some of the same responses – a smile, a feeling of happiness, and enjoyment of something beautiful. See for yourself.

Cool Jewelry for Hot Days

Summer brings long, hot, lazy days. It’s a time to add colorful, playful, light and airy jewelry to your wardrobe. You can experiment with bold colors and designs without a large investment.
Earrings Go for a pop of bright color – maybe even a color you’ve never tried before. Longer earrings, particularly if your hair is short or pulled up, draw attention to your face. Try a simple drop earring with a vivid crystal or glass bead. For an updated classic look, go for geometric shapes in brightly colored wire. For a more traditional look, select slender earrings in hammered copper, brass, bronze or sterling silver.

Necklaces Add sparkle with a single crystal cube on an almost invisible necklace – the perfect accent for casual or dressy clothes. Be dramatic with a chunky circle of multi-colored quartz, a cluster of bead flowers, or a collar of hammered metal shapes. For a more delicate look, try fine chains interspersed with gemstones or crystals.

Bracelets A thin silver, copper or brass bangle adds shimmer without a lot of weight. Prefer a cuff bracelet, look for narrow ones which can be stacked if you want a more striking look.
Rings Look for bright colors and fun shapes such as my Just for Fun Swirly Wire Rings which come in a variety of summery colors. For a cool look, consider a simple hammered sterling silver ring.

Pendants A single wire-wrapped gemstone on a chain can make a statement without a lot of weight. Jade, rose quartz or rock crystal quartz will add a touch of coolness to your outfit.

Bright & Beautiful

Don't be dazed by the dog days of August. Energize your wardrobe and yourself with jewelry in bright, fun colors. Pick jewelry in a color you never considered wearing - hot pink? bright orange? fuchsia? lime green? fiery red? A new pair of earrings or a simple necklace won't break the bank. Look for jewelry that incorporates any (or all) of the following.
Beads & Crystals Their colors are almost endless. Maybe earrings with turquoise and lime green beads? How about a necklace with a single sparkling crystal in a color you don't normally wear? Perhaps a bracelet with small beads in all the colors of the rainbow? Just looking through my beads inspires me to create wildly colorful jewelry.

Colored Wire Color-coated copper wire is my base for a myriad of light-weight designs. I combine colors like seafoam green and peacock blue or fuchsia and hot pink to make fun little rings and earrings. I use heavy-weight wire to make pendants that look a bit like a rose or peony in bloom. They're so light weight you hardly know you have them on.
Gemstones While Mother Nature produces gemstones in an array of colors, man often enhances the drabber natural stones by dying them gorgeous colors. I like to feature a couple of gemstone beads on a simple necklace. I accent larger gemstones with wire to create pendants which make a statement without being heavy.

Resin I'm just starting to explore all the fun ways resin can be used in jewelry. I've tinted it by adding dust from chalk pastels to create any color I can dream of and then creating colorful bubbles by framing the resin with wire. I've also used clear resin to bring out the bright colors in snippets from greeting cards by my sister-in-law, Susan Schmitt. I turn the resin-coated snippets into birds, butterflies, leaves and bubbles.
Go a little wild with your jewelry and jazz up your summer look!
